OK, so my Fall 2023 anime obsession with Jujutsu Kaisen season 2 (the infamous and entirely unfair to fans Shibuya Incident arc) is nearly over, as well as a few other fall anime that I dig. So what's on tap for me for the Winter 2024 season of anime? What new shows or new seasons am I looking forward to seeing?
Anime Watch List Winter & Spring 2024: New Seasons:
First on the list is Blue Exorcist's third season. This one took me by surprise as I was totally not expecting a new season of this. It's a happy surprise. I love this anime, but I had heard the author was having some issues...or that the 2nd season (the Kyoto arc) wasn't as popular, so I'm thrilled to see this back again. "Blue Exorcist: Shimane Illuminati Saga" will start 1/7/24.
"Haikyu!! Movie: Battle of the Garbage Dump" is one I've been waiting YEARS to see. Gawt damn, my volleyball boys are finally, FINALLY back and ready to begin the event promised from season 1. The battle of the garbage dump! Crows versus Cats! Karasuno takes on their practice partners from Tokyo, Nekoma. Bring it! Air Date is 2/16/2024.
Although we do not get a new season or a movie, we do get a new OVA for "My Happy Marriage." This anime surprised me with it's dark undertones, though the trope of "the mistreated stereotypical good Japanese girl who actually has a pretty awesome superpower and wins the main man" is kind of overdone, I really enjoyed this Netflix anime. There were some interesting twists in the first season. A second season has been greenlit by Netflix to air sometime after 2024. The OVA airs 3/15/2024.
And lots of good news for those of us who love boy's love (BL) and yaoi (stories of romance between male characters)!
There is a new "given" movie coming! More rock and roll adventures from ALL the boys in all the bands! This movie will focus on the relationship between given's band rivals in the bad SYH, named for the original band members Shizusumi, Yuki, and Hiragi. They kept Yuki's letter in the band name even though he passed away before the events of season one. I read this in the manga and if Blue Lynx animates according to the manga, this will be the hottest and most passionate movie of the franchise. Can't wait. I hope we get a few more Mafyu x Uenoyama and Kaji x Haru moments, though.
Fuck yeah! The new "given" film airs on 1/27/24.
I am SOOOOOOO looking forward to this comedy love story! Cherry Magic: Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard? is finally getting an anime adaptation. It's been made into live action before, this is the first time it has been animated.
YES!!!
In Spring of 2024, there are some BIG fan favorite shonen returning. First up, is My Hero Academia, season 7. The war between the League of Villians and Hero society continues and I'm sure will be even more intense than season 6, in which some liked heroes (and villians) met their ends. MHA S7 is scheduled to start 5/4/2024.
In addition to MHA's new season, shonen fans are eagerly awaiting the new season of Demon Slayer in 2024. The Hashira Training Arc season begins sometime in April 2024 with no set date given on My Anime List's upcoming seasons chart.
Brand New Anime in Winter/Spring 2024 I Want to See:
A new anime called "The Witch and the Beast" looks pretty damn good, both in plot and in animation style.
With the success of soft slice of life/comedy/workplace anine "My New Boss is Goofy" (LOVE! LOVE! LOVE!) comes another workplace anime, Gekkan Mousou Kagaku, though I'm not sure by the description if it will be as cutesy soft as the aforementioned. It looks more superpower fantasy isekei type. The description is enough to get my curiosity piqued though.
- "Gekkan Mousou Kagaku is set in Most City in an unknown country in a small publishing house that prints a monthly magazine about the most outlandish of things. Everything changes when the staff of the magazine,editor-in-chief Tarou, his assistant Jirou and dog Saburou, meet with scientist Gorou Satou..."
And there are some anime I need to catch up on from the Fall 2023 season. Currently, I'm catching up on watching season 2 of Spy x Family which is still airing, for a little bit longer, I think. I also need to catch up on the remainder of the Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War anime and the entirity of the second season of The Ancient Magus Bride which sees Chise Hatori going to mage school...in England. Despite the Harry Potter vibes, I expect AMB S2 to be a bit darker than Hogwarts...this is anime after all. I also need to see the new season of Bungo Stray Dogs.
That wraps up my "Anime to Watch in Winter/Spring 2024." There is also a movie for Spy x Family coming out. I don't have too many details on it, and if it is not canon, I may not watch it right away.
Now I'm just waiting to see when and if there will be a new season of Jujutsu Kaisen, possibly in 2025-2026, that will animate the Culling Game arc of the manga. If you thought the Shibuya Incident was rough, you ain't seen nothing yet.
What anime are you looking forward to this Winter and Spring?
